Chunghwa Telecom Taps WiMAX Business by Investing in Global Mobile
December 28, 2007
Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom announced on December 26 that the company has obtained a 14.5% stake in Global Mobile, one of the six WiMAX license holders in Taiwan, Economic Daily News of Taiwan reported.

According to Chunghwa Telecom, the company spent NT$160 million (US$4.9 million; US$1 = NT$32.6) on the stake. This move is seen as an insurance policy in case the company fails to obtain any WiMAX license in following rounds of license auctions. At present, Chunghwa Telecom has no plans for further investments, whether in Global Mobile or other license holders, according to a Dow Jones International News report.

Other new shareholders that have emerged in Global Mobile's first-round fund-raising include: Soft-World International, Videoland Television Network, Silicon Integrated Systems, D-Link, Davicom Semiconductor, China Development Financial Holding, Ruentex Development, and Com2B.
